Helen L. Smith, 72, passed away Friday, March 4, 1994, at the North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, in Mason City, Iowa. Helen, the daughter of Chester and Leath (Rader) Steuerwald was born July 6, 1921, at Boone, Iowa. She moved with her family to Fertile.  She received her education in the Ventura schools. She was united in marriage to Wilbur Smith on April 24, 1945, at Albert Lea, Minnesota.  For a short time the couple lived in Mason City, then they moved to Crystal Lake where they made their home. She enjoyed puzzles, yahtzee, cards, and reading the bible, Helen, read it from cover to cover. Survivors include a daughter, Janice and her husband, Larry Kunkel, Crystal Lake, Iowa; two sons: Dennis and his wife, Becky Smith, Colorado Springs, Colorado; Jimmy and his wife, Eunice Smith, Fall River, Massachusetts; three sisters: Ruth Smith, Mason City, Iowa; Gertrude Kiefer, Kanawha, Iowa; Norma Redmond, Mason City, Iowa; three brothers: Darrell and his wife, Bev Steuerwald, Columbia, Missouri; Arthur and his wife, Jo Steuerwald, Knoxville, Iowa; Donnie and his wife, Bev Steuerwald, Carlisle, Iowa; and six grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Wilbur on March 27, 1988, and two brothers.
