Obituary


Helen M. Peebles, 93, of Crystal Lake, passed away Saturday, October 31, 2009 at Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt.

Funeral services for Helen Peebles will be held at 1:30 PM on Tuesday, November 3, 2009 at the Calvary Lutheran Church in Crystal Lake with Pastor Robert Snitzer officiating. Burial will be at the Crystal Lake Cemetery in Crystal Lake.

Visitation for will be held on Monday, November 2, 2009 from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at Ewing Funeral Chapel, 178 Center Street West, in Britt and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church.

Helen, the daughter of Chris J. and Gurina (Truelson) Hacker was born July 7, 1916 at Havelock, Iowa. She attended school in Havelock, graduating from Havelock High School in 1934.

Helen was united in marriage with James Peebles on January 5, 1955 in Rutland, Iowa. The couple moved to a farm near Thompson where they resided for twenty years. James retired from farming for health reasons in 1975 and the family moved to Crystal Lake. Helen was employed at the Crystal Lake School as a cook retiring in 1985.

Helen enjoyed playing poker at the brother-sister reunions and once enjoyed a very memorable trip to Reno, Nevada. She was an Iowa Hawkeye Basketball fan, Minnesota Vikings and Minnesota Twins fan. She enjoyed discussing the Young and the Restless with her sister Marion.

Her faith was very important to her. She was a long time member of the Calvary Lutheran Church in Crystal Lake, where she served as secretary for the church council and was a member of the ladies aid. She enjoyed making quilts and was an excellent seamstress.

Helen is survived by her son Allan of Crystal Lake; two brothers: Donald (Janet) Hacker of Hancock, Minnesota and Darvin (Norma) Hacker of Decorah, Iowa, numerous nieces, nephews and other family members.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband James in 1984; four brothers: Eugene, Fred, Virgil, Richard and one sister Marion Iverson.
