Herbert Leroy, son of John D.L. and Tena (Sandman) Pals, was born in rural Alexander, Iowa, on June 19, 1936. He attended country school and graduated from Belmond High School in 1954. After high school, Herb joined the United States Army. While stationed in Germany he met and married Hildegard Wehner. The couple made their home in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, before moving to Belmond with their two young daughters in the early 1960’s. While living in Belmond, their two sons were born. The couple later divorced.

Herb worked as a foreman for Forester. After the tornado in 1966, Herb started helping Maynard (Chip) Johnson at the furniture store on Main Street, and later purchased the store and named it Pals Home Interiors. He also owned a drive-in for a short period.

Herb enjoyed rebuilding cars and remodeling houses. With the help of his older brothers, Herb built his house in Belmond, and lived in it until his passing. Herb loved to travel – visiting over 40 different countries. He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church of Belmond and served on the church council.

Herb is survived by his three children, Petra (Wayne) Lamfers of Belmond, Nanci (David) Borg of Missouri Valley, and Neal (Julie) Pals of Clear Lake; five grandchildren, Ash (Nicole), Austin (Angie), Rob (Emily), Derek (Olivia), and Alyssa (Aaron); 7 great-grandchildren, Keaton, Remington, Kaden, Andrew, Avery, Alec, and Teagan; three siblings, Helen (Ed) Schnittjer of Clarion, Jerry (Ruth) Pals of Belmond, and Mary Jane Isaacson of Melbourne; and many nieces, nephews, and other family and friends.
