Obituary


Herman H. Hiemstra, 91, of Clarion passed away Tuesday, October 3, 2017 at the Iowa Specialty Hospital in Belmond, Iowa.

Funeral services for Herman Hiemstra will be held on Saturday, October 7, 2017 at 11:00AM at Ewing Funeral Home, 1801 Central Avenue East in Clarion, with Pastor Karen Fausch officiating.  Burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery in Clarion.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the funeral home on Saturday.

Herman Hubert, son of Hubert and Inez (Crawford) Hiemstra, was born on March 30, 1926 near Meservey. Herman grew up in Meservey until his family moved to Clarion when he was 15 years old. He graduated from Clarion High School in 1944.

On June 1, 1946, Herman was united in marriage to Virginia McGrath. The couple was blessed with six children: David, Sheryl, Karen, Paula, Dale, and Ellen. They moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan where Herman attended Calvin College. Due to an illness, the family moved back to the family farm near Clarion. Herman farmed until 1988. After retirement, Herman taught Sunday school at the nursing home in Clarion and was a longtime member of the Gideon’s. After Virginia’s death in 1993, Herman married Caroline Fausch-Smith on July 28, 1997 in Des Moines.

Herman loved all kinds of Jeeps, and he enjoyed keeping busy tinkering with things. Herman had a strong Christian faith and was currently a member of the Lighthouse Church of the Nazarene in Clarion.

Herman is survived by his wife Caroline Hiemstra; five children David (Linda) Hiemstra, Sheryl Graddick, Karen (Steve) Marvets, Paula Harms, and Dale (Colleen) Hiemstra; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; two sisters Leona Studer and Rose (Adolph) Meinders; brother Carl (Shirley) Hiemstra, and many Fausch and Smith family members.

He is preceded in death by his first wife Virginia Hiemstra; daughter Ellen; infant daughter; parents; and two sisters Wanda and Arlene.
