Hilda Akers, age 96, of Dows passed away Sunday, February 17, 2013, at the Muse
Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.
Funeral services for Hilda Akers will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Wednesday,
February 20, 2013 at First Lutheran Church of Dows. Pastor Ron Nelson will
officiate. Burial will be at Otis Grove Cemetery east of Dows. Visitation for
Hilda Akers will be held from 9:00 A.M. until 11:00 A.M. Wednesday at the
church. Dugger Funeral Home, 100 North Lee Street in Dows is in charge of
arrangements.
Hilda, the daughter of Jens and Lillie Peterson Christensen, was born September
22, 1916 near Dows in Oakland Township. She grew up there and attended country
school. Hilda then attended and graduated from Popejoy High School in 1934. She
moved to a farm north of Hampton. It was during this time that Hilda worked at a
bakery and grocery store in Hampton.
Hilda was united in marriage to J. Maurice Akers on October 12, 1941. The couple
made their home on the Akers family farm near Dows. Hilda worked at home as a
housewife and mother. Maurice passed away in 1973, and soon after Hilda moved to
Dows. She lived there until moving to Ashbrook Assisted Living in Iowa Falls in
2011. Hilda was a devoted member of First Lutheran Church in Dows. She sewed
numerous quilts at the church and was still knitting baby sweaters prior to her
death. She is remembered as an avid reader.
Hilda is survived by her children, Joyce Davis and husband Michael of DeSoto,
WI, Linda Dow and husband Curtis of Dows, Janet Van Overmeer and husband Al of
Sioux Falls, SD, John Akers and wife Ann of Charlotte, NC, son-in-law Phil
Borleske of Vinton. She is also survived by nine grandchildren, six
step-grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, sister Ethel Spencer of California,
sister-in-law Ileene Christensen of Charles City and numerous nieces and
nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, Maurice, daughter Phyllis in
2012, great grandson John Hepperlen, sister Marie Gaard, and two brothers, Leo
and Nels Christensen.
