Obituary

Irene Mae (Abbott) Mosher, 99, of Clarion, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 13, 2019 at Iowa Specialty Hospital in Clarion.

Funeral services for Irene Mosher will be held at 1:30 PM on Saturday, August 17, 2019 at the United Church of Christ Congregational, 121 3rd Avenue North West in Clarion, with Pastor Bill Kem officiating. Burial will take place at Evergreen Cemetery in Clarion.

Visitation will be held prior to services at the church on Saturday, from 12:00 PM – 1:30 PM.

Irene was born a “preemie,” weighing 2 ½ pounds, on February 20, 1920, to Richard Hobart Abbott and Lula Christina (Weiss) Abbott in Webster City, Iowa. Irene received her education in Wright county schools.

Irene was united in marriage to Melvin Thomas Mosher on November 20, 1937 in Princeton, Missouri. She had known Melvin since she was 8 years old.

Melvin and Irene began farming northwest of Eagle Grove, Iowa. They also farmed near Fertile, Minnesota for 3 years and returned to Wright County in 1950. They bought the hog buying station from Dean Myer, and it became the Mosher Livestock Market here in Clarion, Iowa.

Melvin and Irene always worked together in everything they did and Irene always worked where she was needed most. Irene enjoyed her family and was proud of them. She always had a big garden and shared it with family and friends. Irene loved flowers and something was always blooming at her home. She also loved fishing and enjoyed going with Melvin, their children, grandchildren and her parents.

Irene also kept busy going to her children’s activities, embroidering, crocheting, making quilts, doing puzzles and cooking and canning produce from her bountiful garden. She joined the Congregational Church in 1944 and was active in many areas of the church, as well as delivering Meals on Wheels and visiting the Care Center.

Irene was preceded in death by her husband Melvin and her parents and 2 siblings. Left to cherish her love are her children, Maynard (Fran) Mosher of Ft. Pierce, Florida, Bonnie (Hayden) Arnold of Ellijay, Georgia and Kelly (Chichi) Mosher of Austin, Minnesota; nine grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
