Obituary


Irene Sylvia Nelson, age 94, of Clarion died on Saturday, May 1, 2004 at the USA Health Care Center in Clarion.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, May 4, 2004, at the First Lutheran Church in Clarion with Rev. Gary Boen officiating.  Burial will take place at Rose Hill Cemetery in Eagle Grove.

Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 PM on Monday,  May 3, 2004 at the Ewing Dugger Funeral Home, 602 North Main Street in Clarion and will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday.

Irene Sylvia Nelson was born on June 6, 1909 to Amos Peter and Bertina Sophia (Anderson) Hagenson in Thompson, Iowa.  She was raised in the Thompson area and graduated from Thompson High School.

On April 1, 1929 she was united in marriage to Oscar Nelson in Thompson, Iowa and this union was blessed with 8 children.  The couple lived in the Bode area moving to Eagle Grove where they raised their family.  Irene was a cook at the Eagle Grove High School for many years.  After Oscar’s death in 1962, Irene moved to the Southtown Apartments in Clarion.  In the last few years she was a resident at the USA Health Care Center until her recent passing.

Irene loved having her family over for dinner on Sunday’s.  She enjoyed doing her needlework, which included knitting, crocheting and tatting.  She also took great pleasure in gardening and cooking for her family and others.  Irene was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Clarion, the FLCW, the First Lutheran Sew Ladies and was involved in all activities at the Southtown Apartments and the Care Center.

Irene is survived by her 8 children, Ardis Anthony of Culver City, CA, Cecil Nelson (Lois) of Fort Dodge, Beverly Kelling (Harold) of Hayward, WI, Carol Hurst (Stan) of Kingman, AZ, Gladys Riley (Maurice) of Clarion, Robert Nelson (Laurie) of Boulder City, NV, Mary Ann Heiken (Dennis) of Clayton, WI and David Nelson (Jayne) of Roland; 17 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Oscar; sister, Elnora Anderson; and 2 brothers, Adain Hagenson and Amos Hagenson; and a great-grandson, Carter David Nelson.
