James Owen, the son of Orville K. and Frances Hansen Eliason was born June 4, 1947 in Belmond, Iowa. He grew up in Kanawha, where he attended school. Jim graduated from Kanawha High School in 1965. After high school, Jim attended an auto mechanic trade school for a short period. Jim was blessed with three children, Stacy, John and Tyler. His family lived in Omaha, NE. where Jim attended trade school. The family moved to Forest City and Jim worked at Winnebago. The family moved to St. Cloud, MN where Jim worked construction. The family moved back to Omaha, NE and Jim played semi-pro football. Jim moved back to Kanawha in 1974. He farmed on the family farm and worked for Kiefer Built. Jim began working at Eaton Corporation in Belmond in 1993. It was near that time he moved to Belmond. Jim also drove truck for Hueneman Trucking out of Garner until his health made him stop.

After starting work at Eaton, Jim met and fell in love with his soul-mate, true-love, Kathleen (O’ Brien) Hughes. The two were married at the United Methodist Church in Belmond in 1994. After getting married, Jim and Kathy made their home in Belmond. Jim was blessed with another child, with the addition of Kathy’s son, Greg. It was then that Jim began his wonderful life, following the children in all their endeavors. Later, Jim and Kathy, would be blessed with seven grandchildren. Spending time with them and following them in their busy lives, brought them much joy.

If spending time with Kathy and the children and grandchildren wasn’t joyous enough, Jim would find his way to Lake Winnibigoshish as many times as he could. Jim loved to go fishing, and “Lake Winnie” in Minnesota was his favorite spot to go. Jim was a dedicated and loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He had a heart as big as his voice.
