Jeremiah "Jere" Schmidt, 90, of Britt passed away Tuesday, July 25, 2023 at his home in Britt. Funeral services for Jere Schmidt will be held on Monday, July 31, 2023 at 10:30 AM at the Britt Christian Reformed Church - At The Crossroads Ministries, 569 Main Avenue North in Britt, with Pastor Jason Semans officiating.  Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Britt. Visitation will be held on Sunday, July 30, 2023 from 2:00 – 4:00 PM at Ewing Funeral Chapel, 178 Center Street West in Britt, and continue one hour prior to services at the church on Monday. Jeremiah Herbert Schmidt, the son of George and Lenora (Burnett) Schmidt, was born on June 16, 1933 on the family farm in rural Titonka. He grew up on the farm and graduated from Titonka High School with the class of 1952. After high school, Jere enlisted into the Unites States Army.  He served his country actively, as a Military Policeman, for two years being stationed overseas in Germany. He was honorably discharged in 1955 while remaining in the Army Reserves for an additional six years. On October 12, 1954 Jere was united in marriage to Verla Janes at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. This loving marriage brought forth three children, Barbara, Brian and Brenda. The couple ran the coffee shop in Britt before they moved to Lower Lake, California.  There, Jere was employed with the county for seven years before the family briefly moved to Colorado.  In 1972, the family moved to Britt where they had since resided.  Jere worked for Hancock County for many years. As a family man, Jere was excited to retire from the county to take care of his grandchildren full time. He also kept busy with his woodworking skills tackling all projects put in front of him. His hobbies included, solving puzzles, building model airplanes and tending his garden. Jere will be remembered for his selfless nature, joyous attitude, love for his family, and the sparkle in his eye. He is survived by his daughters Barb Shew of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma and Brenda (Brent) Harms of Britt; seven grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; sister Emmagene Silber of Buffalo Center; brother Glen "Corky" (Sharon) Schmidt of Lower Lake, California; sisters-in-law Deloris (Bob) Ruter of Kanawha and Sandy Janes of Britt. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife of 61 years Verla Janes, son Brian Schmidt, infant granddaughter Courtney, sisters Sally Beihn and Lenora Holtorf and brothers George Schmidt, Jr., Harold Schmidt, Roger Schmidt and Lester Schmidt.
