Obituary


Joan Marie (Lowenberg) Janssen, 90 of Belmond, passed away Sunday, April 4, 2021 at the Rehabilitation Center of Belmond.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Joan Janssen will be held on Thursday, April 8, 2021 at 10:30 AM at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, 1207 3rd Street North East in Belmond with Father Jerry Blake officiating.  Graveside services will follow at St. Francis Catholic Cemetery in Belmond.

Visitation for Joan Janssen will be held on Wednesday, April 7, 2021 from 4:30 – 7:00 PM, with a Rosary and Scriptural Wake Service beginning at 4:30 PM at Ewing Funeral Home, 111 Luick’s Lane South in Belmond, and will continue one hour prior to Mass at the church on Thursday morning.

Those planning to attend are asked to wear a face covering please.

Joan was born on March 2, 1931 to Arthur and Mary (Nolan) Lowenberg on the farm in Goodell, Iowa. She attended Goodell School and graduated with the class of 1948.

She attended Hamilton Business College in Mason City and worked for a short time before she married Merle Janssen on February 19, 1951 in Goodell, Iowa.

Joan was a caring, loving wife and mother who devoted her time to raising her family and helping on the farm. She was a faithful member of the Catholic Church her entire life. Joan enjoyed attending her children and grandchildren’s school activities and was a lifelong Minnesota Twins fan and loved watching any sports.

Joan gave back to her community by volunteering with the Belmond Hospital Auxiliary; the Goodell American Legion Auxiliary; Hospice; Twin Lakes 4-H Leader; Belmond School Board and Belmond Rehabilitation Center.

Joan is survived by her eight children: Danny (Donnelle), Dennis (Barb), Steve (Marilyn), Scot (Jody), Terry (Donna), Tim (Jane), Becky, Brad (Amy); 17 grandchildren and 30 great grandchildren and two granddogs.

Danny’s children: Matt (Melissa), Nick (Kacie), Jenni (Nick) Schauf, Joni (Nate) Osmundson, Jeff (Bailey)

Dennis’ children: Rachel (Nate) Evans, Ryan (Jessica Rose), Heather (Andy) Sivia

Steve’s children: Jessica (Dan Carolus) Lane, Eric (Sarah), Nolan

Scot’s children: Justin (Megan), Holly (Mark) Lukasiewicz

Terry’s children: Brian (Kayley), Megan (Andy Spurgin)

Brad’s children: Caleb and Alyssa

Brother Tom (Sue) Lowenberg, sister Therese Heminger and sister-in-law Faye (Wayne) Irelan.

Joan was preceded in death by her husband Merle (2003), infant daughter Diana Marie, parents, brothers Merlin Lowenberg, Duane Lowenberg, sisters Betty Jendrich and Lois Sanzone.

Memorials may be sent to the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Belmond, St. Croix Hospice, Belmond-Klemme Scholarship Foundation II or to the donor’s choice.
