Obituary


John D. Brock, Sr., 85, of Britt passed away Thursday, August 6, 2009 at Westview Care Center in Britt.

Mass of Christian Burial for John Brock will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, August 11, 2009 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Britt. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Britt. 

Visitation will be held on Monday, August 10, 2009 from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm at Ewing Funeral Chapel, 178 Center Street West in Britt and continue one hour prior to services at the church. A Scriptural Wake service will be held at 7:00 pm Monday evening at the Funeral Chapel.

John Daniel Brock Sr., the son of William and Mildred (Montgomery) Brock, was born January 31, 1924, in Hiteman, Iowa. He attended and graduated from a one-room country school near Hiteman.

John was united in marriage with Ruby Cooper on January 1, 1944 in Des Moines, Iowa. The couple lived throughout the United States, while John served his country with his military career. During his 24 years with the Air Force, John served in the Pacific during WWII and was in the Korean Conflict.

Following John’s retirement in 1965 from the military, he and Ruby came to Britt. They owned and operated the Ben Franklin in Britt for 27 years. In 1991, they sold the store and retired together. John was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and the Rotary in Britt. He enjoyed golfing, fishing and spending time with his family.

John is survived by his wife of 65 years Ruby; six children and nine grandchildren: Cathy (Glen) Vaught of Sun City West, Arizona and their children Diane and Steven, John (Diane) Brock of Waterford, Wisconsin and their children Tara and Kelly, Chris (Rick) Grabish of Estes Park, Colorado, Pat (Rick) Mattoon of Britt and their children Amanda and Ashley, James (JoDee) Brock of Albany, Oregon and their daughter Kayla and Steven (Mina) Brock of Greenwood, Indiana and their children Dillan and Savanah; seven great-grandchildren; his sister Patricia Brock and brother Michael Brock.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers Gene and William Brock.
