Obituary


John McMahon, 98, passed away Tuesday, November 20, 2001 at Westview Care Center in Britt.

He was born April 7, 1903 in Sexton, Iowa to John and Esther McMahon.  He received his education there and farmed the homestead after his father passed away.  He met and married Stasia O'Brien.  They had four children Emmett, James, Leo, and Marie.  During their 50 years of marriage they lived on farms near Wesley, Hutchins, Britt and Corwith.  After Stasia passed away he married Anne Sweeney.  They resided in Britt.

John loved farming.  As well as working the land he raised lots of livestock.  He took pride in raising prime beef cattle and lambs.  He was an active member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church and belonged to the Knights of Coloumbus.

He is survived by his three children Emmett and wife, Evelyn of Clearwater, Florida, Jim and wife, Nancy of Huntsville, Alabama, and Marie Egolf on Concord, California; eight grandchildren Jana, Kristi, Susan, John Joseph, Thomas, Jennifer, Sarah, and John David; nine great-grandchildren; three nephews Charles, and Donald Lickteig of Algona and Tim; four nieces Joan Elbert of Algona, Mary Lickteig of Omaha, Nebraska, and Sr. Joan Lickteig and Sr. Mary Clement of Dubuque.

He is preceded in death by his first wife Stasia, son Leo and grandson Mark and wife Anne Sweeney, his parents, three brothers, Francis, Luke, Charles, and three sisters Mary, Rose, and Louise.

He saw many changes during his lifetime.  He enriched the lives of many people and will be missed by those who loved him.
