Obituary


John Meyer, 74, of Clarion passed away Sunday, September 16, 2012 at Rotary Ann Nursing Home in Eagle Grove.

A memorial Mass for John Meyer will be held on Saturday, September 22, 2012 at 11:00 AM at St. John’s Catholic Church, 608 2nd Avenue North East, in Clarion with Father Nils Hernandez and Deacon Jerry Temeyer officiating.  Inurnment will take place at a later date.

Visitation will be held on Friday, September 21, 2012 from 6:00 – 8:00 PM at Ewing Funeral Home, 602 North Main Street, in Clarion with a Rosary service beginning at 7:45 PM.

John William Meyer was born February 26, 1938 in Webster City, Iowa. The son of Ira and Mildred (Ellston) Meyer he was one of six children. He moved with the family as they farmed several places in Wright County. John attended rural schools during his lower grades graduating from Clarion High School in 1957. After graduation John started farming the family farm in Lincoln Township.

On June 5, 1965, John and Kathleen Trausch were united in marriage at St. John’s Catholic Church in Clarion. To this union two sons were born, John Francis and James Francis.

John was employed at Trigg’s in Belmond beginning in 1985 and Henning’s Construction in 1990. He ceased to farm in 1990 and began working at Hagie’s, and finished his working career at Kiefer-Built of Kanawha in 2009 when he retired.

John loved to go tubing at several favorite places. He enjoyed woodworking, finishing the inside of the family home they built on the home place. He would work on it on rainy days or in the winter. He also built furniture, small buildings and did furniture refinishing. His finish was as smooth as glass. John and Kathy raised huge gardens, spending many hours canning tomatoes. Hunting and fishing were also favorites along with cooking. Favorites to make were homemade pizza and bacon and tomato casserole.

John was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease) in December of 2010. Unable to live at home he entered Rotary Ann Senior Living in Eagle Grove. John had a successful garden in the enclosed yard there his first summer. He enjoyed visits from family, friends and his two dogs Katie and Annie. Katie is a certified Therapy dog and visited other residents at the Rotary Ann Senior Living.

John is survived by his wife Kathleen of Clarion; sons John (Megan) of Ankeny, Iowa, James (Melissa) of Janesville, Wisconsin and one granddaughter Legacy Katherine Menitt Meyer.  He is also survived by three siblings; Levetta Tillman of Clarion, Iowa, Richard (Pat) Meyer of Spirit Lake, Iowa, Margie McCarthy of Cupertino, California, and sister-in-law Kae Meyer of Sun City, Arizona. Also several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ira and Mildred; sister Shirley and brother Gary.
