Obituary

Kathryn Hagie West, 63, died after a long almost 5 year battle with breast cancer on May 4,2006. A Celebration of Life for Kathryn will be 2:00 P.M. Saturday, May 13,2006 at the Ewing Dugger Helgeson Funeral Home. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the Ewing Dugger Helgeson Funeral Home. Kathy was born July 25, 1942, in Clarion, Iowa to Ray and June Hagie. From the beginning Kathy loved the outdoors and animals- especially horses. Being raised on the farm was the perfect place. She graduated from Clarion High School, the University of Iowa and held her master’s degree from Concordia University. Kathy taught for several years and a recent article in the Chicago  Tribune obituary section had a special feature story about what a wonderful teacher she was. She married Ted West and together they raised two daughters, Angie and Kristen. They moved several times to different cities but finally settled in Barrington Hills, Illinois, a beautiful equestrian community with wooden riding trails. Their home included five acres so Kathy could keep her horses, dogs, cats, and a place to create beautiful gardens. She was a member of the Fox Rover Pony Club and Barrington Hills Riding Club. Her two daughters still share Kathy’s passion for riding. Biking excursions with a group of close friends was especially enjoyable to her. She spent her last days never complaining and being cared for by Ted, Angie, Kristin, John Panko and her many friends. Someone who gave her great delight was her granddaughter Jacy. Although there is now a void in our lives, our family has special memories of what a beautiful person Kathy was inside and out, her smile, and her calm, gentle demeanor. She and her family lived life to the fullest by enjoying their travels, interest and their many, many friends. Survivors include her husband, Ted; her children, Angela West of Antioch, Illinois and Kristin West (John Panko) of Chicago, Illinois; granddaughter Jacy; her parents Ray and June Hagie of Clarion; sister, Margaret Severino (Frank) Of Urbandale; brother, John Hagie (Barb)of Clarion; mother-in-law, Betty West of Ankeny; sister-in-law, Cheryl West Brandt (Joe) of LePorte City, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her beloved father-in-law, Everett West.
