Obituary

Kimberly (Mewes) Bates, 47, of Clear Lake, formerly of Kanawha, Iowa passed away Wednesday, December 4, 2019, at MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center in Mason City. Visitation for Kim Bates will be held Monday, December 9, 2019 from 5:00 – 7:00 PM at Ewing Funeral Home 118 East Second Street in Kanawha. Public graveside service and burial will be in Amsterdam Township Cemetery near Kanawha on Tuesday, December 10, 2019 at 1:00 PM. Kimberly Marie Bates, the daughter of Jack and Jane (Walk) Mewes, was born July 9, 1972 in Belmond, Iowa.  Kim was raised in Kanawha and graduated with the West Hancock class of 1990. On September 3, 1994, Kim married Jeff Bates at the Kanawha Methodist Church.  To this union, two children were born Colbie and Dalton. Some of the best family memories and birthdays were spent at wrestling meets. She also enjoyed hunting while driving her dad’s truck and fishing with her family. Since her children were the most important things in her life, she was very excited for their upcoming weddings. Kim loved being a caregiver throughout her life. She ran an in-home day care and worked at different area nursing homes where she treated residents just like family. Outside of work, she also enjoyed spending time and making memories with friends. Kim loved dogs especially her boxer, Harley. She also loved her grand pups Harper and Remy. She knew how to not take life so seriously, could eat Chinese food for every meal, was an expert at having fun, and had the world’s biggest heart. She loved and supported her nieces and nephew like her own. Kim would help anyone if they needed anything, even if she, didn’t have it herself. Kim is survived by her husband Jeff Bates of Kanawha; daughter Colbie Bates and fiancé Layton Sousa of Kanawha; son Dalton Bates and fiancée Rhiannon Lewis of Kanawha; sister Tammy (Dana) Kraft of Kanawha; Peggy (Dennis) Dallman; beloved nieces and nephew Cody (Jeremy) Purvis and family, Jessie Kraft, Taylor (Brady) Otis and family, Dusty Kraft, Carrie (Todd) Hungerford and family, Nicole (Greg) Beasley and family, and Shawn (Jana) Mewes and family; special friend Scott Hayungs; best friend Chelle LaRue; along with aunts and uncles, extended family and many close friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Jack Jr. and Doug, maternal and paternal grandparents.
