Obituary


Larry Cockrell, 66, of Kanawha, passed away Wednesday, July 11, 2012 at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

A gathering of family and friends will be held on Monday, July 16, 2012 from 5:00 until 7:00 PM at Ewing Funeral Home, 118 East 2nd Street, in Kanawha.

Inurnment will be at Amsterdam Township Cemetery in Kanawha at a later date. 

Larry Kay Cockrell, the son of Archie and Marietta (Hepperly) Cockrell, was born on May 26, 1946 in Britt, Iowa. He was raised in Osakis, Minnesota and later the Corwith, Iowa area attending school both places, but graduating from Corwith-Wesley High School in 1964.

On December 5, 1964 Larry was united in marriage to Virginia Eliason at the Kanawha Lutheran Church. In this union two sons were born, Anthony Dean and Richard Lee.

Larry was self-employed for 15 years in Kanawha at the service station and bowling alley. He later worked and retired from Kanawha Co-op Oil/North Central Co-op after working for 18 and a half years.

Larry was a member of the Kanawha Lutheran Church, a retired 20-year member of the Kanawha Fire Department and former Kanawha City Councilman. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, the Minnesota Vikings, NASCAR and the Iowa Hawkeyes. Larry loved spending time with his family, especially fishing with his grandkids.

Larry is survived by his two sons: Anthony (Annette) Cockrell of Meservey and Richard (Maria) Cockrell of Aschaffenburg, Germany; four grandchildren: Adam and Abby Cockrell and Steffen and Justin Cockrell; sister Bonnie Heise of Fowler, Indiana; two brothers: Paul (Marie) Cockrell of Chandler, Oklahoma and Keith (Marilyn) Cockrell of Forest City; along with numerous nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Virginia “Ginger” in 2007; and two brothers: Clyde and Dean Cockrell.
