Obituary


Leonard D. Nelson, 75, of Baxter, Iowa formerly of Kanwha, passed away Monday, September 3, 2001 at the Kavanaugh House Hospice Unit on 56th in Des Moines.

Leonard, the son of Nels A. and Christena (Omvig) Nelson, was born October 25, 1925 near Kanawha, Iowa.  He attended country schools in the Kanawha area.  He was baptized and confirmed at the Kanawha Lutheran Church.  In 1943 Leonard joined the U.S. Navy where he became a Corpsman.  He cared for wonded soldiers and sailors in Hawaii following Pearl Harbor.  Leonard returned home in 1946 and lived in California.

On February 18, 1994 he married Lucille Bucklin in Baxter, Iowa.  They made their home in Baxter.

Leonard enjoyed fishing, golfing, and hunting.  He also enjoyed attending buckskinner rendezvous and air shows.  A favorite pastime was to watch, TV, especially old westerns and WWII movies.  He and Lucille loved to travel.

Leonard was a member of the Evangelical Free Church in Baxter.

Leonard is survived by his wife Lucille; one stepdaughter Kathy Faire and her husband, Eddie Glen Allen, Missouri; one stepson William Bucklin and his wife, Cathy of Marshalltown, Iowa; one stepdaughter-in-law Cindy Bucklin of Baxter, Iowa; six step-grandchildren, three step-great grandchildren; three sisters: Agnes Carlson of Des Moines, Iowa, Edith Evans of Belmond, Iowa, Darlene Smith of Clear Lake, Iowa, and several nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, two sisters, and three stepsons, Ronald in 1997, James and Michael.
