Leonard Pistek, JR was born on September 25, 1955 in Mason City, Iowa to Leonard
and Kathleen (Chizek) Pistek. On June 21, 1980 he married Cindy Hawe at St.
Boniface Church in Garner. After the wedding reception family and friends
enjoyed a "Duncan Dance"; the place where they met 5 years before. Leonard and
Cindy moved onto an acreage where he continued his life-long passion of farming.
Leonard started farming as a teen, spent many years working with Don Kopacek,
expanded his operation in the Britt area, and finally added a grain and cow/calf
operation in Southern Iowa.
Leonard was a faith-filled family man. His wife Cindy; children Doug, Kathleen
and Marie were the main focus of his family, but "family" expanded much further
to anyone who needed assistance. One of Leonard's favorite "gifting" to others
was planting a very large sweet corn patch to be shared by many. There was an
annual sweet corn freezing day for family and after that other family and
friends were invited to help themselves to whatever they needed. He enjoyed
delivering corn on the cob to people in town, sometimes he was lucky enough to
get kolaches in exchange!
Leonard joined Paul Kelly as a real estate agent and enjoyed helping people find
a new home, buy their first farm or expand their current farming operation. When
the work was done, Leonard would be hunting or fishing. An annual fishing trip
to Minnesota with a large group of friends was a highlight of the year, now
enjoyed by his grandchildren as well. Each fall Leonard enjoyed hunting in
southern Iowa with his dad and other family members. When Doug was old enough,
he joined in the trips making it a 3-generation adventure.
Leonard was very active in the community as a member of Farm Bureau (serving as
President), BIDCO, Knights of Columbus, Hancock County Economic Board, and Britt
Lions Club (serving as President). Leonard was instrumental in establishing the
Ag in the Classroom program through Farm Bureau. Leonard enjoyed many years
serving as a board member on New Horizon Cooperative.
Those surviving Leonard is Cindy, his wife of 43 years; 3 children, Doug
(Jennie) Pistek of Albia, Iowa; Kathleen (Tim) Schwan of Woodstock, Illinois;
Marie (Mark) Klein of Ankeny, Iowa; grandchildren, Ashley Brenan; Tucker and
