Obituary


LeRoy W. Scheeper, 84, of Kanawha, formerly of Davenport, passed away Monday, August 16, 2010 at the Kanawha Community Home in Kanawha.

Funeral services for LeRoy Scheeper will be held on Friday, August 20, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. at the Kanawha Lutheran Church, 124 West 4th Street, in Kanawha with Pastor Karen Grandall officiating. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery in Davenport, Iowa, on Monday, August 23, 2010 at 12:00 p.m., noon.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, August 19, 2010 from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. at Ewing Funeral Home, 118 East 2nd Street, in Kanawha, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church.

LeRoy William Scheeper, the son of William and Martha (Kruckenberg) Scheeper, was born April 20, 1926 on the family farm south of Lowden, Iowa. He grew up on the farm attending school and graduating from Lowden High School in 1943.

LeRoy served in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict from 1948 to 1952. He was also involved with the Army Reserve and the Navy Reserve.

On August 8, 1954 LeRoy was united in marriage to Vera Van Walterop at the First Christian Church in Davenport. The couple made their home in Davenport and moved to Kanawha in recent years.

LeRoy attended the American Institute of Commerce and received his Advanced Accounting Certificate in 1954. He also attended the University of Oklahoma. LeRoy was a government employee at Rock Island Arsenal until his retirement in 1993.

LeRoy was very active with the Masonic Trinity Lodge #208 where he was Secretary, Past Master, appointed and elected official. He was involved with: Scott Council #53 where he achieved Illustrious Master three times, Mohassen Grotto, KCCH, Davenport Consistory, Scottish Right, Kaaba Shrine, Royal Order of Scotland, St. Bartholomew Conclave Order of the Red Cross of Constantine, York Rite College, White Shrine of Jerusalem, Amaranth, Philalethes Society, Grand Chaplain Grand Council of Royal and Select Masters, President of Past Commanders Association, Davenport High Twelve Club #47, Grand Commandery of Knights Templar, Commander of St. Simon of Commandery #9, and Eastern Star.

LeRoy was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Lowden at a young age. He was confirmed on April 2, 1939 and his confirmation verse was Proverbs 23:26. LeRoy and his wife enjoyed attending First Christian Church as members.

Left to cherish LeRoy’s memory are his wife of 56 years Vera; four daughters: Sarah Jane Scheeper of California, Karen Ann (Ron) Fenstermaker of California, Diana Lynn (Douglas) Kreitlow of Kanawha, Iowa and Carol Ruth Dodds of Pennsylvania; eight grandchildren: Benjamin, Isabella, William, Samuel, Austin, Joshua, Emily and Christopher; along with his Kruckenberg cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; infant son Phillip Mark; twin siblings Olga Kohnert and Oscar Scheeper (who was killed in North Africa while serving in WWII); four other brothers: John, Edgar, George and Gerhardt Scheeper.
