Loraine Mae Halfwassen, 92, Belmond, died February 1, 2016 at the Rehabilitation Center of Belmond. Memorial services will be held later this spring. The University of Iowa College of Medicine acknowledges the generous contribution Loraine has made to the advancement of medical science. In lieu of flowers, the family wishes that memorials be made to the Belmond Parks in Loraine’s name.

Loraine was born July 8, 1923 to Will and Grace (Pals) Tinkey of Alexander. She graduated from Alexander High School in 1941. She married John Halfwassen on July 8, 1941. John and Loraine were engaged in dairy farming northeast of Alexander until they retired and moved to Belmond in 1983. They spent 17 winters in Florida.

Loraine was a member of Immanuel Reformed Church where she served many years as a Sunday school teacher.

Loraine’s greatest joy was socializing with her family and her many friends in the rural community. She and John had a special fondness for square dancing and enjoyed traveling to various dancing events in Iowa and Florida.

Her husband, a son, daughter, grandson, three sisters, and two brothers preceded her in death.

Loraine is survived by her sons Colin (Caryl Anne) of Naples, FL and Darwin (Vicki) of Des Moines; grandchildren Joel of Phoenix, AZ, Brent of Milwaukee, WI, and Anita Unger of Des Moines; great-grandson Colin of Phoenix; and great-granddaughter Penelope and great- grandson Henry of Milwaukee.
