Lorraine E. (Bushnell) Young

Lorraine E. Young, 85, of Clarion, passed away Sunday, February 14, 2010 at Wright Medical Center in Clarion. Memorial services for Lorraine Young will be held on Friday, February 19, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. at First United Methodist Church in Clarion with Rev. Don Morrison officiating. Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 18, 2010 from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. at First United Methodist Church and will continue one hour prior to services at the church.  Ewing Funeral Home of Clarion is assisting the family in carrying out Lorraine’s wishes. Lorraine Elizabeth Young, daughter of Miles and Lilace (Richards) Bushnell was born on June 17, 1924 in Manchester, Iowa. Lorraine graduated from Manchester High School.  Lorraine was married to William “Bill” E. Young of Manchester, Iowa on September 5, 1946.  To this union were born three children, Deana Lorraine, William “Bill” Richard, and Burdette “Bud” Austin. Returning to college in 1970, Lorraine graduated magna cum laude from Iowa State University with a bachelor’s degree in education.  She taught school in Dows, Goldfield, and Clarion, and was a substitute teacher for many years following her fulltime teaching career.  Lorraine worked at Sumners Insurance Agency in Clarion until retiring in 2009. Lorraine cared deeply for her family, her friends, her church, and for the community of Clarion. She served on fundraising committees for the new Clarion Aquatic Center and the elementary playground. She served on the Enhancement Committee and helped with fundraising for the Clarion Public Library remodel. Music was in Lorraine’s bones.  She played the piano for many contest groups, Five for One, and the First United Methodist Church Praise Team. Lorraine is survived by two sons, William Richard and wife Nancy Jensen Young of Ankeny, Iowa, and Burdette Austin and wife Bonnie Darbyshire Young of Clarion; son-in-law Mitchell Stock of Modesto, California; seven grandsons: William Grant Young (Michelle) of Saylorville, Iowa and Michael (Stacy) Young of Des Moines; Greg (Stacy), Steve (Tiffany), Dan (Nicole) Stock of California; Timothy Burdette (Samantha) Young of Ames, Iowa and Andrew Burdette Young of Clarion.  There are 12 great-grandchildren: William Young, Carter Young, Sophia Young, Alexandra Stock, Daniella Stock, Matilda Stock, Jesse Stock, Robert Stock, Ellie Stock, Natalie Stock, Emma Stock and Brynn Stock; one brother, Richard Bushnell and wife Gloria of Manchester, Iowa, and one sister-in-law, Jean Young of Manchester, Iowa; and numerous nieces and nephews, other family members and friends. Lorraine is preceded in death by her husband, Bill; parents Miles and Lilace Bushnell; and her daughter, Deana Stock. Memorials may be sent to First United Methodist Church, 201 Third Avenue, Clarion or Wright Medical Foundation, 1316 S. Main, Clarion.
