Louid Smidt, Jr., 90, passed away, Saturday, August 14, 1999, at his home in
Britt, Iowa.
Louis, the son of Ludwig and Lena (Heerkes) Smidt, was born April 16, 1909 at
their farm home.
On December 28, 1933, he was united in marriage to Hattie Cooper at the Kanawha
Christian Reformed parsonage. The couple made their home with Hattie's parents
until 1938 at which time they moved to a farm southwest of Britt where they
farmed until 1974. They then moved to a home in Britt.
Louie and Hattie enjoyed traveling. Louie looked forward to running the combine
every fall for his son-in-law, Harvey, even doing some last year at age 89.
Louie was a member of the Britt Christian Reformed Church.
"Gramps", as he was affectionately called found great joy in his grandchildren
and great grandchildren, and was in turn cherished by them.
Louie is survived by one daughter, Mary Lou Johnson of Forest City; three
grandchildren and two great grandchildren: Dawn Bunnell and her husband, Jim and
sons Mitchell and Trevor of Kansas City, Missouri, Jason Johnson of Ames, Iowa,
Kristi Wirtjes and her husband, Greg of Forest City; one sister, Annie Smidt of
Britt.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, son-in-law, Harvey, five
brothers and two sisters.
