Obituary


Margaret M. Pierce, 98, of Britt, passed away Monday, July 23, 2018, at Kanawha Community Home. A memorial Mass for Margaret Pierce will be held on Saturday, August 4, 2018 at 11:30 AM at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, 139 3rd Street Southeast in Britt with Fr. Jim Dubert officiating. Burial will be in St. Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church on Saturday, August 4. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Alzheimer’s Association.

Margaret Mary Garman was born on October 17, 1919 to August and Mary “Mae” (Laux) Garman. Margaret attended Wesley school and graduated as valedictorian in 1937. Margaret worked as a nanny for John and Helen Mullins in Corwith. Later, Margaret worked in a hospital in Vancouver, Washington, where she lived with her first husband, Louis Schaller. They were only married less than two years when he drowned. Margaret met her second husband, Francis Pierce, and were married on April 12, 1947.

Margaret was active in Brownie and Girl Scout camps in the summer, 4-H judging, sewing, displaying exhibits at the Hancock County Fair and winning many ribbons and making several stuffed toys for her grandchildren.

Margaret is survived by her daughter Barbara (Ken) Stewart; grandchildren Michele Larson and Christopher Larson; great-grandchildren Jordan, Jake, and Jazlyn Tinkler and Alyssa and Michael Larson; sister Rita Yohn of Bloomington, Minnesota; sisters-in-law Theresa Garman of Wesley, and Freida Garman of Livermore; brother-in-law James Pierce of Destrehan, Louisiana; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents August and Mary Garman; both husbands Francis Pierce and Louis Schaller; sisters Ruth Garman BVM and Lorrine Goetz; and brothers Paul, Louis, Edward, Thomas, and John Garman.
