Mavis M. (Smith) Betten, age 95 of Britt, Iowa, formerly Kanawha and Ankeny,
passed away Wednesday, August 19, 2020 at the Summit House in Britt, Iowa.
The funeral service will be held 1:00 PM Monday, August 24, 2020 at Christian
Reformed Church, 129 E 3rd St, Kanawha, followed by burial at Amsterdam Township
Cemetery, Kanawha. The visitation will begin at noon on Monday at church.

Mavis Marie Smith, daughter of William and Mabel (Fitzgerald) Smith was born on
August 27, 1924 in rural Britt, Iowa. She graduated from Britt High School in
1943.
On July 17, 1945, Mavis was united in marriage to John Betten at the Smith
family farm home near Britt. The couple started farming south of Britt and in
1951 moved to a farm southwest of Kanawha. They retired in Kanawha in 1987.
Mavis enjoyed helping John in the fields and being outside. She was a hard
worker, dedicated and loved her family. Mavis was a good coach and was proud of
her children, many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved playing with
the grandchildren, doing whatever they wanted. Mavis also enjoyed spending
winters in Florida, reading and working out puzzles. In Mavis' own words – "I
enjoyed having coffee in town and just being with friends". She was very happy
to return to Britt and enjoyed being part of Summit House.
Mavis is survived by her children Shirley Dittberner of Elk River, MN, Jack
Betten (Judy) of Fowler, IN, Craig Betten (Denise) of Ankeny, IA, Shar
VanSchouwen (Joe) of Sioux Center, IA, Sonette Carter (Lennie, Jr. "Rocky") of
North Pole, AK; grandchildren Shawn Hereaux (Jimmie), Roxane Dittberner, Jace
Betten, David Betten, Adam Betten (Beth), Amber Swickard, Erin Brown (David),
Travis Betten, Joshua VanSchouwen (Carlene), Daniel VanSchouwen (Laurie), Jacob
VanSchouwen, Ashley Carroll (Ben), Fawn Carter (Christopher); 23
great-grandchildren.
Mavis was preceded in death by her parents; husband John; brother Melvin;
great-grandchild Shawn and son-in-law Vern Dittberner.
