Obituary


Mavis Leone Hiscocks, 88, passed away Tuesday, March 25, 1997, at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt, Iowa.

Mavis, was born September 14, 1908, the daughter of John and Selma (Anderson) Rapp on a farm near Britt.  She received her education in Britt School graduating with the Class of 1926.  She attended Mason City Junior College, graduating in 1957.  On July 3, 1928, she was united in marriage with Robert H. Hiscocks at Casey, Iowa.  They farmed at Corwith and then farmed for her grandfather, L.N. Anderson until March 21, 1953, when her husband passed away.

She taught country school and in the Britt Community, teaching 1st grade, until her retirement in 1973.

Mavis belonged to the United Methodist Church, Women's Club, Esther Circle, King's Daughters & Rebecca Lodge, holding many offices in each.  She enjoyed teaching her many students, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  She also enjoyed her Sunday morning coffees.

Mavis is survived by five sons and three daughters: Mrs. Gene (Bonnie) Doughan of Dexter, MN; William and his wife, Irene Hiscocks of Garner; Donald and his wife, Gloria Hiscocks of Britt; Dean and his wife, Marie Hiscocks of Grand Meadow, MN; Monte and his wife, Kay Hiscocks of Britt; Jon Hiscocks of Britt; two daughters-in-law, Dorothy Hiscocks of Britt and Lurene Pruitt and her husband, Ken of Ankeny; a son-on-law, Steve Casperson of Sioux Falls, SD; forty-four grandchildren; fifty-eight great-grandchildren; one brother, Raymond and his wife, Dorothy Rapp of Forest City; one sister, Mrs. Jack (Mildred) Hernon of Clear Lake; four half-sisters, Alice Rayhons of Garner; June Nelson of Klemme; Shirley Netland of Garner; Bonnie Ruppert of Northwood; one half-brother, John Rapp of Kansas; and three sisters-in law, Esther Rapp of Garner, Pauline Rapp of Renwick and Cindy Rapp of New Mexico.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Robert in 1953; two sons, Robert Jr. in 1995 and Alan in 1964; one daughter, Nancy in 1991; one daughter-in-law, Beverly Hiscocks in 1995; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother, Milbern Rapp; three sisters, Evelyn, Thelma and Elevia; two half-sisters, Arlis and Wanda; and three half-brothers, Dale, Calvin and Harold.
