Mavis Schroeder, 88, of Kanawha passed away on Monday, May 27, 2019, at the
Kanawha Community Home. Memorial services for Mavis Schroeder will be held on
Saturday, June 1, 2019, at 11:00 AM at Amsterdam Township Cemetery near Kanawha
with Pastor Mark Heath officiating. In the event of rain, this service will be
held at the United Methodist Church in Kanawha.
Mavis Arlene, daughter of Paul and Hazel (Jurgensen) Scott, was born on August
12, 1930 on a farm near Stilson. Mavis grew up in the Britt area and graduated
from Britt High School in 1947. After graduating high school, she graduated from
Iowa School of Nursing in Des Moines.
On September 22, 1951, she married Robert Schroeder in Des Moines. Bob's career
in grain elevator management located them in various towns including Denhart,
Clarion, Belmond, Waseca, Minnesota and New Boston, Illinois before returning to
the family farm near Kanawha in 1986. For many years, they enjoyed spending
winters in Rio Grande Valley in Texas.
Mavis was a member of the Kanawha United Methodist Church and was very involved
in the work of the church. For many years, she actively served as an officer
with the District UMW.
Mavis became a resident of the Kanawha Community Home on April 30, 2014, where
for a time she pursued her hobbies of knitting beautiful baby shawls, counted
cross stitch (also beautiful!) and she was an avid reader.
Mavis is survived by good friends Bob (Deloris) Ruter of Kanawha and Beryl
Friedow all from Kanawha and other church and community friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Bob in 2013, son Allan in
1978, sister Beverly Scott in 2005; and brother-in-law David Schroeder in 2000.
