Obituary


Maxine Dougherty, 90, of Belmond passed away Sunday, December 31, 2017 at the Rehabilitation Center of Belmond.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, January 6, 2018 at 10:30 AM at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, 1207 3rd Street North East in Belmond, with Father Jerry Blake officiating. Burial will take place at St. Francis Catholic Cemetery in Belmond.

Visitation will be held on Friday, January 5, 2018 from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM, at Ewing Funeral Home, 111 Luick’s Lane South in Belmond and continues one hour prior to the funeral services at the church on Saturday.

Mary Maxine (Martin) Dougherty was born January 8, 1927 to Arthur and Genevieve (Miller) Martin in Clarion. She was raised and educated in Clarion and graduated from Clarion High School.

Following graduation, Maxine went to work for Wright County Treasurers Office and met and dated Russ Dougherty. Russ served in the United States Navy during World War II, and the couple were married June 7, 1948, in Clarion, Iowa.

Maxine and Russ eventually opened a jewelry store in Belmond, moving there in 1949. Dougherty Jewelry was a mainstay business in Belmond for 57 years. Maxine was very active in the community as a member of Women’s Century Club, P.E.O., Belmond Chamber of Commerce and St. Francis Xavier Church. Her hobbies included growing flowers, an interest passed down from her mother, spending time at the lake at their cabin, and being surrounded by her family.

Left to survive Maxine are her sons, Dennis (Joan) Dougherty of Belmond, Ron (Diane) Dougherty of Ankeny, Steve (Val) Dougherty of Belmond and Randy (Kris) Dougherty of Belmond; grandchildren Mark (Tammy) Dougherty, Phil (Christine) Dougherty, Brad Dougherty, Eric (Jayme) Dougherty, Jennifer (Joel) Eddleman, Jill (Todd) Sears, Katie (Tim) Barkema, Sara (Nic) Sailsbury, Neil (Amanda) Dougherty, Jacki (Brandon) Knight, Chelsey Dougherty, and Shelby (Dane) Askelsen; 19 great-grandchildren; sister LaVonne Falconer of Belmond and brother Russ Martin of Clarksville; along with numerous nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.

Maxine was preceded in death by her parents, husband Russ in 2008, brothers Carroll Martin and Jack Martin, and infant grandson Ryan Dougherty.
