Obituary


Melvin Wayne Freund, 83, of Clarion passed away on Saturday, June 18, 2011 at Wright Medical Center in Clarion.

Funeral services for Melvin Freund will be held on Tuesday, June 21, 2011 at 10:30 AM at the United Methodist Church in Clarion with Pastor Don Morrison officiating. Burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery in Clarion.

Visitation for Melvin Freund will be on Monday, June 20, 2011 from 5-7 PM at Ewing Funeral Home, 602 North Main Street, in Clarion and will continue one hour prior to services at the church.

Mel was born on November 9, 1927, to Ernest Darrell and Anna Elizabeth (Brown) Freund in Fort Dodge, IA, the youngest of seven children. He graduated from Otho High School in 1945. He served in the U.S. Army at the close of World War II and was honorably discharged in 1947.

He married Deloris Darlene Muench on October 9, 1949, at the First United Methodist Church in Fort Dodge. He worked for National Gypsum in Fort Dodge and farmed in Gowrie and Milford before moving to Clarion in 1962. There he worked as a salesman for Walnut Grove, All-Star Pro Golf, Erickson Manufacturing, and Brown Upholstery.

He enjoyed woodworking in his shop, golfing, playing cards, his Shih Tzu, Buddy, but most of all spending time with family and friends.

Survivors include his son, Bob (Sue) Freund of Clarion, IA; his daughters, LuAnn Freund of Des Moines, IA and Lori (Bruce) Frink of Clarion, IA; his grandchildren Pam Wagner, of Denver, CO, Matt (Crystal) Freund of Minneapolis, MN; Erin (Tyler) Riker, of Des Moines, IA; Nick Rohrer (Meggie Lee) of Pleasant Hill, IA, Jessica (Ryan) Nail of Cedar Falls, IA, Dale Frink of Rancho Santa Margarita, CA, and Chris Frink of Dove Canyon, CA; and his great grandson, Elliot Freund, of Minneapolis, MN. He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Dee ("Tootie") Freund on September 24, 2010.

He was also preceded in death by his parents, Ernest Freund, Anna Freund, and Mildred (Brady) Freund; his brothers, Maynard, Merle, Maurice; and his sisters, Marion Freund, Margaret Stanek, and Madge Hirschberg.

The family would like to thank the staff at Wright Medical Center and Wright County Public Health and Hospice for the love and care they all provided for Mel.
