Merrill J. Thompson, 79 of Britt, passed away Saturday, May 24, 2014 at Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt.

Memorial services for Merrill Thompson will be held at 2:30 PM on Tuesday, June 3, 2014, at First Lutheran Church, 70 5th Avenue North West, in Britt with Pastor Lee Nelson officiating.  Burial will take place at St. Paul’s Lutheran Cemetery in rural Lakota.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday. 

Merrill Thompson was born June 4, 1934 to Thomas and Viola (Engevik) Thompson in Linden Township in Winnebago County.

Merrill drove truck for Lakota Livestock, his father’s business, for many years.  Later, he owned and operated restaurants in Revere, Minnesota and in Lakota.

Merrill moved to Britt in 2008 and married his wife June on April 25, 2009.  He was a member of First Lutheran Church in Britt.

Merrill enjoyed playing Yahtzee and 500, vegetable and flower gardening, bird watching and cooking.  He also made a variety of wood crafts, including garden ornaments.

Most of all, Merrill loved his family and thought so much of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Merrill is survived by his wife June Thompson of Britt; children Jim (Bonnie) Thompson of Tennessee, Kathy Dohman of Bancroft, Terry Thompson of Minnesota, Perry Thompson of Wisconsin, Lynn Lutton of Bancroft, Sharon (Rick) Smith of Minnesota and Renee Yunker of Minnesota; 19 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law Marilyn Thompson of Lakota and Tressie Thompson of Minnesota and numerous step-relatives.

Merrill was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers Roger, Robert, and Denny Thompson.
