Obituary


Mikel D. Hagen, 71 of Clarion, passed away Saturday, November 20, 2021 at his home. A visitation will be held Saturday, December 4, 2021 from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Ewing Funeral Home in Clarion, 1801 Central Avenue East Clarion, Iowa. Mikel David, son of Kervyn and Donna (Simonson) Hagen, was born on April 30, 1950 in Sisseton, South Dakota. He graduated from Sisseton High School with the class of 1968, and went on to earn his degree from the North Dakota State College of Science. While growing up in South Dakota, Mike was involved in Boy Scouts where he earned his Eagle Scout badge.  Mike loved the outdoors and spent many summers with his siblings and cousins at the lake. Mike began his professional career in the energy industry at Minnkota Power in Grand Forks, North Dakota and later held positions at Wright-Hennepin Rural Electric Cooperative in Maple Lake, Minnesota, before accepting a position as General Manager at Prairie Energy in Clarion, Iowa.  Throughout his career Mike was heavily involved in local economic development and played a key role in bringing many new businesses to the Wright County area.  Following retirement from Prairie Energy, Mike settled into lake life at Lake Cornelia where he enjoyed hosting and cooking for his many friends. Mike was also known for his artistic talents and enjoyed drawing, woodworking, and playing his guitar.  His daughters have fond memories of singing along with him as he strummed many songs.  Later on, Mike took up welding and enjoyed crafting many works of art out of metal. Mike was a dog lover, and cherished his dogs Dixie, Sassy, and Riley very much. Mikel is survived by daughters Jennifer (Paul) Brown, and Stephanie (Barry Brennecke) Brenning; brother Robert (Sandy Pate) Hagen; sisters Karen (Terry) Sucato, and Kay (Kathy Bates) Hagen; grandchildren Allison Martz, Emily Martz, Nicholas Hewitt, and Jacob Hewitt.  Mike was loved by many, including his family, former wife JoAnne Hagen, his many cousins, and his friends at Lake Cornelia. Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Kervyn and Donna Hagen.
