Nettie Assink, 91, of Kanawha passed away Easter Sunday April 20, 2014, at the Kanawha Community Home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM on Monday, April 28, 2014, at Kanawha Christian Reformed Church, 129 East 3rd Street in Kanawha, with Pastor Steve Schulz officiating.  Burial will be at Amsterdam Township Cemetery in Kanawha.

Visitation will be held from 3:00 – 5:00 PM on Sunday, April  27, 2014, at Ewing Funeral Home, 118 East 2nd Street in Kanawha, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church.

Nettie was born May 2, 1922, to Nick and Nellie (Beninga) Christians in Norway Township in Wright County, IA. She attended country schools, then high school in Kanawha, graduating in 1938.

She was united in marriage to Harold Lee Assink on November 17, 1942, at her family farm in Wright County.  Together they raised five daughters, living in the town of Kanawha all but the first three months of marriage.  She was a homemaker while her children were small but later entered the work force to help make ends meet.  She painted a lot of living rooms in this town and also enjoyed being a cook’s helper at the nursing home, working for Kenny Kraft at the hardware store and cooking many lunches at the Kanawha Christian School.  Nettie was a member of the Kanawha Christian Reformed Church and Ladies Aid.  She clearly stressed to her children the importance of being involved in and supporting the church.  Her faith in God was evident her entire life.

Nettie had many close friends, especially the “giggly bunch”, many times getting together after Sunday evening church for coffee and lunch.  Big trips were made once her children grew up, married and moved across the country.  Her grandchildren, near and far, were very special to her and she tried to be there for some of their milestones, such as graduations and weddings.

Nettie is survived by her five daughters, Arlys (Russell) Straayer of Champaign, IL, Karen (Gilbert) Asbe of Williamsburg, IA, Avis (Jay) Kaemingk of Bellingham, WA, Carmen (Garry) Settles of Visalia, CA and Christie (Allen) Lang of Kanawha, IA; eleven grandchildren, Valerie (Chris) Goldsmith, Douglas (Sara) Asbe, Angela (Jeff) Holmes, Michelle (Greg) Knack, Ryan (Jennifer) Kaemingk, Ashley (Ryan) Petronella, Alycia (Rudy) Cepeda, Chad (Sara) Lang, Nicole (Brent) Renner, Benjamin (Katharyn) Lang and Kevin (Kirsten) Lang; 22 great-grandchildren, Tyler, Breanna, Calvin, Reagan, Connor, Caleb, Sage, Braden, Taya, Hayden, Madison, Elise, Hailey, Rowan, Leah, Tanner, Tabitha, Tailor, Adam, Penelope, McKayla, and Theodore; one sister-in-law, Mavis Christians and one brother-in-law, Paul (Dorothy) Assink.

Nettie was preceded in death by her husband, Harold in 2004; grandson, Nathaniel Straayer in 2005; sisters, Tena Ruter, Tillie Verbrugge, Minnie Rietema, Marguerite Hensel and Henrietta Rietema and brothers, Edward Christians, Herman Christians, Mike Christians and Jim Christians.
