Obituary


Percy Lee Grove, 84, of Britt passed away Saturday, October 27, 2012 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester Minnesota.

Funeral services for Percy Grove will be held on Friday, November 2, 2012 at 10:30 AM at First Lutheran Church, 70 5th Avenue NW in Britt with Pastor Lee Nelson officiating.  Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Britt.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, November 1, 2012 from 6:00 – 8:00 PM at Ewing Funeral Chapel, 178 Center Street West in Britt and will continue one hour prior to services at the church.

Percy Lee Grove, the son of Harve and Tressie (Slade) Grove was born March 8, 1928 at the Grove home near Williams, Iowa.  Percy attended Rose Grove No. 7 Country School, after which he remained at home to help with farming.  Percy served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War beginning in 1950.

Percy and Carol Claussen were married January 20, 1951 at a Lutheran church near Gilmore City, Iowa.  Upon his discharge from the Army, Percy and Carol began farming outside of Ellsworth, Iowa in 1953.  In 1955, the couple moved to Percy’s father’s farm, then to Britt on a farm west of town where they raised five children.  They later purchased a farm northwest of Britt where they made their home until moving to town in 1991.

Carol passed away April 22, 1991.  Percy retired from farming in 1993.

Percy was a member of First Lutheran Church in Britt, the American Legion, and served on the Britt Co-op Elevator board for nine years.  He enjoyed woodworking for many years.  In 2009, Percy moved to the Summit House where he enjoyed coffee and visiting with his friends.

Percy is survived by four children, Tim (Wendy) Grove of Britt, Catherine (Randy) Hawk of Sitka, Alaska, Willard Grove of Kansas City, Missouri, and Paula (Jim) Dummett of Clear Lake; ten grandchildren, Stacy (Van) Tompkins of Iowa City, Brent (Heather Breshears) Grove of Boone, Heather Hawk of Chicago, Illinois, Mitchell (Elise Scicluna) Hawk of Omaha, Nebraska, Mark Dummett of Indianapolis, Indiana, Scott Dummett of San Francisco, California, Brad (Shauna) Dummett of North Liberty, Logan (Kyle Hert) Hawk of Sitka, Alaska, Todd Dummett of Iowa City, and Ben Grove of Kansas City, Missouri and two great-grandsons, Sander and Levi Tompkins; siblings Roger (Ruth) Grove of Madrid, Nola (Arnie) Lovelace of Webster City, and Rex (Sue) Grove of Davenport; along with numerous nieces, nephews and a dear friend, Lela Freesemann and her family of Britt.

Percy is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Carol, a son Mark, sisters Cleo Fisher and Ann Lemon and his brother Neal Grove.
