Obituary


Phyllis Borel, age 83, of Clarion, passed away Thursday, November 12, 2009 at Careage of Clarion.

Funeral services for Phyllis Borel will be held Monday, November 16, 2009 at 10:30 A.M. at First Lutheran Church in Clarion with Pastor Gary Boen officiating. Burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery in Clarion.

Visitation will be held Sunday, November 15, 2009 from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M. at Ewing Funeral Home, 602 North Main in Clarion and continue one hour prior to services at the church on Monday.

Phyllis Ann Henriksen was born in Clarion, Iowa, on February 23, 1926, to Laurence and Christene (Larsen) Henriksen.  She attended Clarion Schools and graduated in the Class of 1944.  During her senior year in high school, Phyllis was a telephone operator in the Clarion office.  After high school, she attended American Institute of Business in Des Moines and worked one year at Wright Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio.  In 1945, she returned to Mason City, Iowa, as a telephone operator and later as a supervisor.

On October 8, 1946, she was married to Ralph Borel. Starting in 1948, they made their home farming south of Clarion.  Their three children were raised on the farm.  In 1994, Ralph and Phyllis moved into a Clarion condominium.  All family was very important, and she loved entertaining.

Phyllis has been an active member of First Lutheran Church, Ceres Circle since 1948, Hospital Auxiliary, and Meals on Wheels program.  She enjoyed gardening, indoor plants, and especially baking and cooking.

Phyllis is survived by her husband, Ralph; her three children: Jane Dettman (William) of Clarion, Michael J. Borel (Joan) of Alamo, California, and James C. Borel (Marcia) of West Chester, Pennsylvania; six grandchildren: Matthew Dettman of Mountain View, California, Molly Terhune (Josh) of Kansas City, Missouri, Melissa Borel of Sacramento, California, Clint Borel (Britany) of Littleton, Colorado, David Borel of South San Francisco, California, and Bethany Borel of New York, New York; one sister: Helen McPhail of Lake Oswego, Oregon, one brother: John Henriksen (Doris) of East Moline, Illinois, and one sister-in-law: Mary Ellen Henriksen of Floyds Knobs, Indiana; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters Agnes Lee and Joanna Sorensen, and her brother Larry Henriksen.
