Obituary


Richard "Dick" D. Hankins passed away Saturday, March 8, 1997, at Veterans Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa.

Dick, the son of James and Gertie (Ennen) Hankins, was born September 2, 1926 at Corwith, Iowa. In 1936, he moved with his parents to Fansler, Iowa where his father was mining engineer at Guthrie Center, Iowa and Dick attended county school at Victory No. 2.  Following a mining accident the family moved to Indianapolis, Indiana where he graduated from Ben Davis High School in 1943.  That year the family returned to Corwith, and Richard joined the U.S. Army.  He served in World War II, Korean War and Viet Nam Conflict.  He retired from the Army on November 1, 1967 with an Honorable discharge he was a supervisor at the Kendall Company in Georgia.  In 1970, he moved to Corwith.  A year later his daughter Diana came to live with him.  He held various jobs in the area, later moving to Algona.  Since 1996, he has been ill and was hospitalized March 5, 1997 at the VA Hospital, Des Moines.

Dick very much enjoyed fishing, his dogs and his Stetson hat.

Dick is survived  by a daughter Diana Smith and her husband Scott who is in active duty with US Navy and their children Prescott (whom he nicknamed Cowboy), Alex, Jeri and Scott all of Chesapeake, VA; step-daughter Carol Hinkle and husband Iloyn and their children Brian, Sean, and Todd all of Martinez, GA; two sisters: Gloria and husband John Adams, Jr. and Katheryn and husband Charlie Quebe both of Corwith, IA; a brother James and wife Ellen of Banner Elk, NC.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, and a niece.
