Obituary

Richard “Dick” Savoy, 76, of Britt, died Tuesday, March 1, 2011, at Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt, Iowa.

Visitation will be held from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm on Thursday, March 10, 2011 at Ewing Funeral Chapel, 178 Center Street West, in Britt. A private family service will be held at a later date.

Richard Thomas Savoy, known to most as Dick, was born on June 29, 1934, in Winona, Minnesota to Alzier and Marie (Nepper) Savoy. Dick grew up in Morrisonville, Wisconsin and attended college in Madison, Wisconsin.

Dick excelled in athletics both in school and in the army.  He participated in all sports, but he particularly loved gymnastics, football and throwing the hammer in track.

Dick enlisted in the army in 1955 and was stationed in Bamberg, Germany where he met the love of his life - Helga.  Corporal Richard T. Savoy was honorably discharged in 1963.  Dick and Helga married in De Forest, Wisconsin and made their home in Britt, Iowa in 1963.

Dick enjoyed hunting in his younger years, especially with his boys. He also had great pride in each of his seven grandchildren.  His work installing carpet, his sense of humor and his friendliness gave Dick the opportunity to know most folks in the area.  Five years ago Dick lost most of his vision; however, he never complained, but it bothered him that he could not recognize and greet his many acquaintances.

Those lucky to share in his life are his wife of 52 years, Helga; son Thomas (Rita) Savoy, Prior Lake, Minnesota; son, Henry (Shelly) Savoy, Clear Lake, Iowa; son, Steven (Roxanne) Savoy Britt, Iowa.  His loving grandchildren:  Betsey, Daniel, Kaitlyn, Hannah, Alicia, Brookelyn and Jordan; his brothers Ron (Joann) and Don (Barbara) Savoy; and many nieces and nephews.
