Robert Louis Buns was born May 13, 1924 to Herman H. and Anna Sophia (Schleuger) Buns in Woden, Iowa. He was raised and educated in Woden and enlisted in the United States Navy at the age of 17, serving on the battleship USS Colorado, the “Buckin Bronco” and later, on the USS Dayton during World War II. Bob was a 74 year member of the American Legion.
Following his discharge from the Navy, Bob returned to Woden, working for his father and uncle in their road construction business. He and his father later purchased the business from his uncle, and Bob owned and operated the business until his retirement in 1997. Bob was a longtime member of the Associated General Contractors.
Bob was injured on the job, and was a patient at Mercy Hospital in Mason City when he met a young nurse from Lake Mills named Murial Sveen. They were married on July 2, 1952 at the Synod Lutheran Church in Lake Mills and made their home in Forest City. The couple moved to Britt in 1954 where they raised their family and where Bob continued to reside until relocating to Garner in 2010.
Bob was baptized and confirmed as a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Woden. After moving to Britt, he transferred his membership to First Lutheran Church, which he helped build in the mid-1950s.
Bob and Muriel enjoyed traveling south during the winter months, beginning in Texas, later in Florida, and finally at their condo in Mesa, Arizona. In all, Bob spent almost 40 years traveling south.
Bob was incredibly proud of his family, and would frequently say to Muriel “look what the two of us did,” while pointing to his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Bob is survived by his children, Tom (LeAnne) Buns of Garner, Gary (Rose) Buns of Stewartville, Minnesota, Sandra (Kirk) Pearson of Klemme, and David (Vicki) Buns of Fisherville, Kentucky; son-in-law Ronald Brooks of Britt; grandchildren Sarah (Rob) Engebretson, Amy (Nate) Bluhm, Anthony Buns, Matthew Buns, Melissa Pearson, Carrie Brooks, Jennifer (Chuck) Covell, Troy (Ashley) Brooks, Jessica Buns, Keenan Gizzi, Eric (Georgia) Buns and Andrew Buns; great-grandchildren Korey, Nicholas, Austin, Nolan, Ella, Michael, Sydney, Mackenzie, Austin, Chloe, Ember and Xander; along with numerous other relatives and friends.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Muriel in 2006, his daughter Susan in 2011 and his sister, Marjorie Hobbs.
