Robert W. Smith, 80, of Belmond passed away Sunday, September 27, 2020 at the
Rehabilitation Center of Belmond.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, October 2, 2020 at 11:00 AM at Ewing
Funeral Home, 111 Luick's Lane South, in Belmond with Pastor David DeKuiper
officiating. Burial will take place at Immanuel Reformed Church Cemetery in
rural Belmond.
Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the funeral home on
Friday.
Memorials are preferred to donor's choice.
Robert William, son of Harold and Jennie (Pals) Smith, was born on February 1,
1940 in Belmond. He grew up in Belmond and graduated from Belmond High School.
After high school, Robert joined the Army. While stationed in Japan, his
military job was training police dogs. Robert returned back to Belmond, where he
raised mink with his father. Robert worked at Kinseth's Plumbing and Heating for
many years before his retirement. Robert was still actively farming with Larry &
Eugene Pals during harvest. His happiness was being in a tractor.
On December 27, 1963, Robert was united in marriage to Carolyn McCaffrey at the
Immanuel Reformed Church parsonage. They made their home on the farm in rural
Meservey, where they raised their children.
In his younger years, Robert enjoyed fishing, hunting, and fur trapping. After
retirement, he enjoyed going to auctions and had an interest in antiques. During
the winter, he enjoyed putting puzzles together. He traveled and spent time with
his special friend Linda Blau.
Robert is survived by his six children Kim (Mark) Soma of Belmond, Steven
(Devin) Smith of Sioux City, Roy (Monique) Smith of Vinton, Kerri (Dave) Pals of
Belmond, Brandon Smith (Susan Ford) of Kanawha, and Bryan Smith of North Las
Vegas, NV; nine grandchildren Ashley, Sarah, Katelyn, Makayla, Jenna, Rebecca,
Andrew, Elise, and Will; four great-granddaughters Brooklyn, Ava, Avery and
Bristol; siblings Jim (Chris) Smith, Bruce (Pat) Smith, and Judy (Jon) Klink;
special friend Linda Blau; and many other family and friends.
He is preceded in death by his wife Carolyn in 2005; infant son Michael; parents
Harold and Jennie; and nephew Barron.
