Robert William, son of Harold and Jennie (Pals) Smith, was born on February 1, 1940 in Belmond. He grew up in Belmond and graduated from Belmond High School. After high school, Robert joined the Army. While stationed in Japan, his military job was training police dogs. Robert returned back to Belmond, where he raised mink with his father. Robert worked at Kinseth’s Plumbing and Heating for many years before his retirement. Robert was still actively farming with Larry & Eugene Pals during harvest. His happiness was being in a tractor.

On December 27, 1963, Robert was united in marriage to Carolyn McCaffrey at the Immanuel Reformed Church parsonage. They made their home on the farm in rural Meservey, where they raised their children.

In his younger years, Robert enjoyed fishing, hunting, and fur trapping. After retirement, he enjoyed going to auctions and had an interest in antiques. During the winter, he enjoyed putting puzzles together. He traveled and spent time with his special friend Linda Blau.

Robert is survived by his six children Kim (Mark) Soma of Belmond, Steven (Devin) Smith of Sioux City, Roy (Monique) Smith of Vinton, Kerri (Dave) Pals of Belmond, Brandon Smith (Susan Ford) of Kanawha, and Bryan Smith of North Las Vegas, NV; nine grandchildren Ashley, Sarah, Katelyn, Makayla, Jenna, Rebecca, Andrew, Elise, and Will; four great-granddaughters Brooklyn, Ava, Avery and Bristol; siblings Jim (Chris) Smith, Bruce (Pat) Smith, and Judy (Jon) Klink; special friend Linda Blau; and many other family and friends.
