Ronald Ausborn, the son of Harvey and Mildred Bunk Ausborn, was born March 14, 1955 in Belmond, Iowa. He attended school in Klemme, Iowa, graduating from Klemme High School in 1973. After high school Ron began dairy farming with his father near Klemme. Ron was united in marriage to Diana Risius in 1975, and the couple later divorced. He continued to farm until 1984, when he began working as a mechanic for Conoco in Belmond. He went on to work for Central Soya in Belmond for 19 years, and later worked for MaxYield Cooperative and finally AgVantage FS in Alexander, Iowa, where he was employed until he could no longer work due to the progression of Parkinson’s disease.
Ron married Kimberly Hansen on Sept. 15, 1984, at the United Methodist Church in Belmond, Iowa. The couple, together with Kim’s daughter, Amanda, first made their home on the hill in west Belmond. The family expanded to four in 1986 when the couple was blessed with a son, Eric. The family later moved to a farm northeast of Belmond. His children later joined 4-H and Ron became a 4-H leader, and they raised and showed sheep along with other livestock. Ron was superintendent of the sheep department of the Hancock County Fair where he got to teach young people about livestock, which he loved. Ron also enjoyed hunting and fishing.
