Obituary


Ruby M. Nelson, 92, of Kanawha, died Monday, November 8, 2004 at Kanawha Community Home.

Ruby, the daughter of Carl and Bertha (Olson) Vroman, was born March 7, 1912, on a farm near Alden, Iowa where Ruby attended grade school for several years.  Later the family moved to the Goldfield area.   When she was in the eighth grade, Rudy took a job at the Hotel and Cafe where she was employed four and half years while she attended school.  She graduated from Goldfield High School in 1932.

Ruby was united in marriage with Marion Nelson on March 7, 1933.  Marion was the son of Nels A. and Christine (Omvig) Nelson of Kanawha.  The couple lived in the Kanawha area until 1959, when they moved to Belmond.  Marion was employed by Davis Elevator in Denhart for 18 years from 1941 - 1959.

In June of 1965, they moved to Waseca, Minnesota where they lived for two years until Mr. Nelson became ill and they moved back to their home in Belmond.  Shortly after returning to Belmond, Mr. Nelson died.  Ruby continued to live in Belmond where she was a caregiver to friends in need.  Ruby lived with her son Gary and his wife Sharyn from 1991 until 1995 when she became a resident of the Kanawha Community Home.

Ruby was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and the Newcomers Club in Belmond.  She was also a member of the Kanawha Lutheran Church and the ALCW.

She is survived by her children: Marlene Billings of Des Moines, Gary Nelson and his wife, Sharyn of Johnston, Karen Tollefson and her husband Jerry of Champlin, Minnesota; daughter-in-law Judy Nelson of Urbandale; fourteen grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; sister Peggy Kiley of Kanawha; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband; son Donald; two brothers: Annis and Orval; four sisters: Marie, Helen, Florence, and Fern.
