Obituary


Ruth M. Johnson, 93, died Saturday, March 4, 1995, at the Westview Care Center in Britt.

Ruth was born May 20, 1901, on a farm northwest of Wesley.  She graduated from Wesley High School in 1920 and was married to Elmer K. Johnson on March 28, 1923.  They farmed in the Wesley and Lone Rock areas until 1939 when they moved to the Britt area and farmed until 1954, when her husband passed away.  Ruth then moved to her home on 3rd Street Southwest. She was employed at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt from 1955 to 1974.

Ruth was a very creative person and always dedicated to any task set before her.  She loved to read and enjoyed poems, also playing the piano and singing with her family.  She was an active member of the Bethel Baptist Church.  She was also a member of the Hancock County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, the American Legion Auxiliary and the Hancock County Historical Society.  Ruth has been a resident of the Westview Care Center for the last 6 1/2 years where she received wonderful Tender Loving Care.

Survivors include her two sons, Denny and his wife Marjorie, of rural Britt, Walter and his wife, Wilhelmine of Dover, Delaware; three daughters: Jean and her husband, Dale Knapper of Maxwell, California; Sharlene Beenken of Mason City, Iowa; Mary Lee and her husband, Curtis Leuwerke of rural Joice, Iowa; twenty-one grandchildren, thirty-seven great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law: Edna Flom and Adah Larson both of Wesley, and numerous nieces and nephews and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Elmer, her son-in-law, Wesley Beenken, grandson, Gregory Leuwerke, great-grandson, Victory Brown and by four brothers and three sisters.
