Obituary


Sandra Sybil (Slattenow) Buns, 75, of Crystal Lake, passed away Monday, May 5, 2014 at Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt.

Funeral services for Sandra Buns will be held on Thursday, May 8, 2014 at 10:30 AM at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 302 2nd Street in Woden with Reverend Trudy A. Peterson and Reverend S. Kim Peterson officiating.  Interment will be at Bingham Township Cemetery in Woden.

Visitation for Sandra Buns will be held on Wednesday, May 7, 2014 from 5:00 until 7:00 PM at the Ewing Funeral Chapel, 178 Center Street West in Britt and will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday.  

Sandra Sybil (Slattenow) Buns was born August 2, 1938 to Sanford and Alma Slattenow, and raised by Andy and Alma Janssen in Crystal Lake, Iowa.  She attended Crystal Lake High School and graduated in 1956.  She continued her education at Hamilton Business College and  was employed at Allied Mills.

On November 14, 1959, Sandy was united in marriage to Antony Buns at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.  The couple made their home on a farm near Woden where they raised their two children.  Sandy enjoyed cutting stalks in the fall and making lunches for the men.  Sandy’s life was her family; she loved spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, laughing and making memories.

Sandy volunteered her time as a Sunday school teacher, Bible school teacher, and with the Girl Scouts.  Her hobbies included bingo, crafts, crossword puzzles and word finds.

Sandy is survived by her children, Dave (Martha) Buns of Minneapolis, Wendy (Clint) Jensen of Corwith; grandchildren: Ashley (Mathew) Henken of Woden, Tucker (Bri Johnson) Jensen of Crystal Lake, Preston Jensen, and Bennett Jensen, both of Corwith; great-grandchildren: Emma and Zadin Henken, Lexxi and Owen Jensen; brothers: Percy (Linda) Slattenow of Waterloo, Neil Slattenow of Waterloo, and Monte Slattenow of San Diego.

Sandy was preceded in death by her parents Andy and Alma Janssen and Sanford and Alma Slattenow, husband Antony in 2011, brother Richard Janssen, her grandson Weston DeGeus, and great-granddaughter Shaley Henken.
