Obituary


Sandra (Skjeie) Soma, 82, of Belmond, passed away on Friday, May 15, 2020 at her home after a courageous three year battle with cancer.

Due to COVID 19 restrictions currently, a private graveside service for family will be held at Belmond Cemetery. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Memorials may be directed to Trinity Lutheran Church, Gateway Hospice, Belmond-Klemme Scholarship Foundation II, or to the donor’s choice.

Sandra Allen Marie Soma was born on July 11, 1937 to Albert and Joyce (Cleveland) Skjeie in Davenport, Iowa. She was raised in Forest City, Iowa and graduated with the class of 1955.

She married Gilman Soma at Immanuel Lutheran Church’s Fire Side Room in Forest City on June 3, 1955.

Sandra was a caring, loving wife and mother who devoted her time to raising her family and helping on the farm. After raising her family she was employed at Bloemke Pharmacy, in Belmond for 24 years. She was a faithful member of Trinity Lutheran Church for 65 years. Sandra enjoyed attending her children and grandchildren’s school activities.

Sandra is survived by her husband of 65 years, Gilman, four children: Marilyn (Steve) Janssen, Steve (Barb) Soma all of Belmond, Judy Cooper (Doug Nease) of Urbandale, and Jane (Tim) Janssen of Ankeny. Seven grandchildren: Jessica Lane (Dan Carolus), Nichole Thomson (Matt Ernst), Marc Cooper (Miranda Podoll), Eric (Sarah) Janssen, Brad (Paige) Soma, Nolan Janssen and Amy (Ryan) Murray. Eleven great-grandchildren Alexis Lane, Cooper Thomson, Zoe Ernst, Kindin Cooper, Brylee, Lynden and Collyns Janssen, Mia and Isaac Soma, Ella Janssen, and Rowan Murray. Also, special foreign exchange “granddaughter” Natalie (Kris) Theeten and their children, Nils, Ludo and Lars of Switzerland. She is also survived by one brother, Terry Skjeie, and many nieces and nephews.

Sandra was proceeded in death by her parents, brother Earl Skjeie, sister and brother-in-law Alice and Lloyd Olson, nieces Kim Olson and Debbie Hegland and nephew Doug Olson.
