Scott is survived by his father, Michael Shawn (Marci) Flanagan of Marion, Iowa; mother, Margaret Mary Younger Flanagan of Kansas City, Missouri; brothers Shawn Patrick Flanagan of Clinton, Iowa and Steven Joseph Flanagan of St. Cloud, Minnesota; grandparents Larry and Nancy Flanagan of Grimes, Iowa; and nephew Patrick Michael Flanagan, son of Steven. Scott had a very large and loving extended family including 24 wonderful aunts, uncles and cousins, and four step-sisters. Scott was preceded in death by grandparents Albert and Mary Younger and his aunt Judith Younger of Kansas City, Missouri.

Scott was loved by so many he interacted with including many childhood friends, teachers, co-workers. He was easy-going, with an infectious smile, and would always focus on the bright side of any situation. He could get along with anyone from small children to adults from all walks of life. He treated everyone with the utmost respect and dignity.

Scott was best friends with brother, Steven, and the two of them were together most of the time from childhood until his death. Oldest brother Shawn was never far behind and the three of them spent so much time together and were very close. Steven and Shawn both used to help Dad take care of Scott when he was little. Shawn, Steven and Scott were closer than most brothers and were their own support system.

Scott enjoyed the simple pleasures in life, the things many of us miss every day. He was an avid morel mushroom hunter, one of his favorite activities. He loved to fish, camp, cook, and do anything outdoors. On his birthdays, his family made Scott Alaskan king crab, much to his delight.

As a toddler, Scott loved to swim and hang out at the beach every Saturday with his Dad. Scott was his dad’s sidekick and went everywhere with him from the time he was a toddler through his early teens. Scott was dad’s significant other when he was little at many, many events and people would comment on how good he was at events designed for adults that most four-year-olds could not sit through. He even went on dates with his father and he impressed many a date.

As a child, Scott loved his vacations and trips with his Aunt Kathy and Grandpa and Grandpa Flanagan. Scott loved spending time with his large extended family and especially his cousins. He also really enjoyed getting spoiled when his great aunt and uncle Bud and Colleen Flanagan would have him over often.

Scott and Steven enjoyed golfing together and sharing many memorable days together as brothers and best friends, including playing golf together at Gull Lake in Minnesota the day before Scott passed away.

Scott was an avid frisbee golfer and a huge movie buff. He was a lifelong member of the Roman Catholic Church and a believer in God, redemption and Heaven above.

Scott graduated from Linn Mar High School in Marion, and attended St. Mathews Elementary and Regis Middle School, both in Cedar Rapids, through 8th grade. He worked at Papa Murphy Pizza, Menards, Target and Nordstrom distribution center in Marion and Cedar Rapids.

One of Scott’s biggest joys was hanging around with his nephew Patrick Flanagan, whom he was extremely proud of. Scott was a tremendous uncle to Patrick and whenever he saw him, Scott broke out in his classic smile from ear to ear.

Rest eternally, Scott, and know you were loved and cherished. A message from Scott’s father:

Scott, you were not here long enough and we all wanted more time with you. We all miss you already, Scott. You’ll always be my buddy and you know we love you bigger than everything including infinity. Yes, I saw the peaceful expression on your face this week and walked away thinking you know the struggle is over and now you’re hunting mushrooms in heaven.
