Sharon K. (Morris) Schmale, 84, of Meservey, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 6, 2026, at MercyOne North Iowa in Mason City.
Per Sharon’s wishes, no formal services will be held. Her family will gather privately at a later date to celebrate her life and the countless memories she created with those she loved.
Sharon Kay Morris was born on March 29, 1942, in rural Thornton, Iowa, the daughter of Mervin and Barbara (Braga) Morris. She grew up in Meservey and graduated from Meservey High School. During her school years, Sharon was active in athletics and proudly helped her basketball team to the state tournament twice.
On July 24, 1960, Sharon was united in marriage to Vernon Schmale at the Methodist Church in Meservey. Following their marriage, the couple spent several years in California while Vern served in the United States Navy. They later returned to Meservey, where they built a life together and raised their family.
In 1964, Sharon and Vern purchased the bowling alley in Belmond and operated it until the devastating tornado of 1966. Sharon later worked for Tom Thumb Fertilizer in Meservey before joining Vern in supporting the family business, Schmale Feed and Supply, Inc.
Throughout their marriage, Sharon shared Vern’s passion for Thoroughbred horses and horse racing. Together, they traveled extensively across the United States, creating lasting memories and enjoying adventures side by side.
Above all else, Sharon was devoted to her family. She was a loving and supportive mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother whose greatest joy came from spending time with those she loved. Whether cheering from the sidelines at sporting events, attending activities, or simply offering encouragement and support, Sharon was always there. Her presence brought comfort, strength, and unwavering love to her family.
Sharon especially enjoyed hosting family gatherings and was well known for her homemade noodles, a favorite tradition at holiday celebrations. Christmas was her favorite time of year, when her home was filled with togetherness and the warmth she so naturally shared. She believed family was life's greatest blessing, and the values of love, support, and devotion that she demonstrated every day will continue to be carried forward by future generations.
Those left to cherish her memory include her son, Monty (Lori) Schmale of Meservey; daughter, Stacey (Larry) Ubben of Sheffield; grandchildren, Derek (Shantel) Schmale, Cara (Jon) Evans, Kelsey (Shaun) Bolton, and Riley Ubben and special friend, Cait Cohn; great-grandchildren, Wyatt Schmale, Hayden Evans, Leighton Bolton, Remy Bolton, and Hunter Bolton; sister, Judy (Harlan) Buseman; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 63 years, Vernon Schmale, in 2023; her parents, Mervin and Barbara Morris; brother, Carroll Morris; sister-in-law, Vicki Morris; Vern’s parents, Henry Schmale and Mae Floy; brothers-in-law, Robert Schmale and Kenny Smalley, and one grandchild.
Sharon’s legacy is one of love, dedication, and family. She leaves behind generations who were blessed by her kindness, strengthened by her support, and inspired by the example she set. Though she will be deeply missed, her love will remain forever in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
