Obituary


Shirley Hasty, 75, of Kanawha, passed away Friday, June 20, 2025 at Hancock County Health System in Britt.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM on Wednesday, June 25, 2025 at Faith Bible Church, 404 4thStreet Southwest in Britt with Pastor Todd Holman officiating. Burial will take place at Amsterdam Township Cemetery in Kanawha.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM on Tuesday, June 24, 2025 at Ewing Funeral Home, 178 Center Street West in Britt and continue one hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday.

Shirley Jean, daughter of John and Elsie (DeWaard) Miller, was born on October 19, 1949 in Britt. Shirley grew up in Britt where she graduated from Britt High School in 1967. Following high school, Shirley attended business college in Mankato, Minnesota. She took a job for Metropolitan Life Insurance in Waterloo.

On April 12, 1975, Shirley was united in marriage to Steve Hasty at the Christian Reformed Church in Britt. They made their home on the farm near Kanawha where they raised their two children: Scott and Shannon.

Shirley worked along Steve’s side and was a big part of farming. She knew what needed to get done, whether it was running for parts or taking meals out to the field. After her children were grown, Shirley worked at the Kanawha Community Home for over 25 years, working in many departments there.

Shirley was a devoted and loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She supported her grandchildren in their many activities and would drop whatever she was doing to be there for them.

Shirley is survived by her husband of 50 years, Steve Hasty; son Scott (Dina) Hasty; daughter Shannon (Rocky) Berhow; grandchildren Mackenna, Clarissa, Kayla, Ethan, Dakota, Morgan, and Brooklyn; sisters Marge Reed and Darlene (Lee) Buseman; and many other family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents John and Elsie; Steve’s parents Grover and Alva (Skauge) Hasty; brother Merlyn (Lola) Miller; and brother-in-law Doug Reed.
