Tena Ruter, 91, of Kanawha passed away Sunday, June 10, 2001 at the Hancock
County Memorial Hospital in Britt.
Tena, the daughter of Nick and Nellie (Beninga) Christians was born May 16, 1910
at Kanawha, Iowa. She grew up in the Kanawha area and received her education in
the country schools.
Tena was united in marriage with John C. Ruter, November 30, 1932 at the home of
her parents in Norway Township near Kanawha. The couple farmed southwest of
Kanawha until 1973. Tena later moved to her home in Kanawha where she lived
until entering the Kanawha Community Home on June 8, 1997.
Tena was a member of the Wright Christian Reformed Church and the Ladies Aid
Society.
Tena is survived by one daughter, Gretta Jane Vaandrager and her husband,
Francis of Kentwood, Michigan; three sons: Norman Ruter and his wife, Arlis of
Denver, Colorado, Robert Ruter and his wife, Deloris of Kanwha, and Kenneth
Ruter and his wife, Sally of Denver, Colorado; 15 grandchildren; 9
great-grandchildren; four sisters: Tillie Verbrugge, Henrietta Rietema and her
husband, Art, Nettie Assink and her husband, Harold, all of Kanawha, and
Marguerite Hensel and her husband, Kelly of Stockton, Illinois; one brother,
James Christians and his wife, Mavis of Grand Rapids, Michigan; three
sisters-in-law:Minnie Christians, Oralene Christians, and Marge Christians all
of Kanawha, and numerous niece and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband John in 1973, one sister
Minnie Rietema, and three brothers: Edward, Herman, and Elmer Christians.
