Obituary


Terry L. Anderson, 87, of Belmond passed away Monday, March 2, 2020 at his home in Belmond.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Terry will be held on Saturday, March 7, 2020 at 10:30 AM at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, 1207 3rd Street North East in Belmond, with Father Jerry Blake officiating. Burial will take place at St. Francis Catholic Cemetery in Belmond.

Visitation will be held on Friday, March 6, 2020 from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM at Ewing Funeral Home, 111 Luick’s Lane South in Belmond and will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday.

In lieu of flowers, Terry’s family suggests memorial contributions may be directed to Gateway Hospice or the Belmond Hospital Foundation and sent to the family’s attention c/o Ewing Funeral Home, P.O. Box 301, Belmond, IA, 50525.

Terry L. Anderson was born June 7, 1932 to Shirley and Geneva (Buffington) Anderson in Mason City. He was raised and educated in Forest City, graduating from Forest City High School with the Class of 1950.

Terry was united in marriage to Marlene Olson, to this union, sons Jeff and Jan were born. The couple later divorced. Terry married Sandy (Smith) Chandler on October 13, 1973. The couple, with sons Lance & Lane Chandler, made their home in Belmond.

Terry worked for Continental Western Insurance for 32 years in their loss control division, until retiring in 1996. During his retirement, he worked for the City of Belmond, taking care of the Belmond Cemetery and later worked at Sports Cages, for 22 years in Belmond.

Terry is a longtime member of Saint Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Belmond, where he was active on various councils and served in a number of posts, including the board of the Archdiocesan branch of Catholic Charities, as a 3rd Degree Knight of Columbus and as an Eucharistic minister.

Terry served on Belmond Community Hospital Board of Trustees for 14 years. In his earlier years, he was active in Jaycees and as a Cub Scout leader. He also served 32 years as chairman of the Resident Advocate Committee of the Belmond Rehabilitation Center, along with many years on the board of the Belmond Food Pantry.

Terry had many hobbies, he crocheted afghans for his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and their spouses. He was an avid sports fan. He attended a countless number of his children’s and grandchildren’s events over the years, often traveling many miles to sporting events, concerts, dance recitals and the like.

Terry is survived by his wife, Sandy Anderson of Belmond; children Jeff (Toni) Anderson of Belmond, Jan (Betsy) Anderson of Coeur d’ Alene, Idaho, Lance (Kathy) Chandler of Belmond and Lane (SueAnn) Chandler of Burnsville, Minnesota; grandchildren, Erika (Brad) Farrell, Josh (Kristen) Anderson, Will Groetken, Jordan (Jon) Wolf, Stephanie Chandler, Adam (Alyssa) Chandler, Ally (Justin) Vagle and Aaron (Katie Larson) Chandler; great-grandchildren Star, Summer, Sunny, Khloe, Kenzie, Addy, Brady, Rylee, Brooklyn, Breckyn, Cohen, Dawsyn, Cameron, Kennedy and Maverick; brother Bill (Grace) Anderson of Bloomington, Minnesota; along with a number of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Terry was preceded in death by his parents.
