Obituary


Tom Delger, 84, of Kanawha passed away Friday, June 9, 2000 at the Trinity Regional Hospital in Fort Dodge, Iowa.

Tom, the son of Harm and Gertie (Klap) Delger was born in Forreston, Illinois on September 13, 1915.  At the age of five, Tom moved with his family to the Kanawha area where he attended country school.

Tom was united in marriage with Delia VanderPloeg on October 14, 1940.  Following their marriage, the couple lived in Kanawha, where Tom was a self-employed truck driver.

He was inducted into the United State Army on September 16, 1943.  Tom served as a rifleman and truck driver with the 14th Infantry Regiment during battles in Central Europe.   After his discharge from the Army in 1946, Tom drove the Standard Oil delivery truck, and then operated the Standard Oil Station for 39 years.  Following his retirement in 1986, Tom became a full time homemaker.

Tom was always a very active man, who loved his family and his Lord very much.  He was a professing member of the Kanahwa Christian Reformed Church, where he served as both Elder and Deacon on the church council and was involved in the men's group.  Tom was interested in Christian education and served a term as treasurer at the Kanawha Christian School.  He also served one term on the Kanawha City Council.  Tom was an avid sportsman who enjoyed bowling, pitching horseshoes, and golfing.

Tom is survived by his wife, Delia of Kanahwa; one daughter Virginia Christians and her husband, Ronald of Kanawha; two sons Timothy and his wife, Linda of Des Moines and Paul of Kanawha; six grandchildren: Karen Parham and her husband, Percy, Todd Christians and his wife, Diana, Dr. Kathleen Christians, Charles Christians and his wife, Gabriella, Shelley Delger, and Brent Delger; and three great-grandchildren: Taylor, Joshua, and Danielle.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother Curtis, and two grandchildren, Jeffery and Troy Christians.
