Velma S. (Dophin) Bird

Velma Bird, 99, of Britt, passed away Friday, September 30, 2011 at Hospice of North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral services for Velma Bird will be held on Tuesday, October 4, 2011, at 10:30 a.m. at Ewing Funeral Chapel, 178 Center Street West, in Britt with Pastor Lee Nelson officiating. Burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery in Britt.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, October 4, 2011, from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service at the funeral home.

Velma Sadie, the daughter of Walter and Ida (Marth) Dolphin, was born on February 13, 1912, in Britt, Iowa. She grew up on the family farm south of Britt and attended country schools.

In 1947, Velma married Fay Bird. Together they formed a family chicken operation in Britt. Following Fay’s death in 1998, Velma continued to maintain her home independently, something she was very proud to accomplish.

Velma loved sewing anything and everything, gardening-especially her flowers and vegetables, cooking, baking and spoiling kids, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and her puppy Tippy.

Velma is survived by her son Roger (Yvonne) Bird of Britt; grandchildren: Shannon Robinson of Des Moines, Amy Wood of Britt and Joel (Katy) Showalter of Rockwell; great-grandchildren: Levi Wood, Haley Wood, Deven Showalter, Landon Showalter and Nia Robinson; sisters-in-law: Ann Dolphin and family of Olathe, Kansas, Jeanie Dolphin and family of Paso Robles, California and Evelyn Dolphin and family of Polson, Montana; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Fay; five brothers: John, George, Donald, Kenny and Bruce; and sister Hazel Belnap.
